Zane’s Room — A very special first birthday, inspired by our family story and created to celebrate our baby boy’s first year in the most meaningful way.
As a Dallas fine art maternity and newborn photographer, I’ve created so many cake smash sessions — but this Ralph Lauren cake smash will always have my heart. I see my clients through some of the most meaningful moments of their lives — from glowing bellies to tiny newborn toes, and then all the special milestones as their babies grow. This time, it was my turn to be on the other side of the camera.
This session will always hold a place in my heart — not just because it was my son’s first birthday, but because it was the first time I got to pour all my creative energy into something so deeply personal. I’ve designed countless setups for my clients, but this one… this one was for my baby boy.
When it came time to plan Zane’s cake smash, I knew I didn’t want just another themed session. I wanted something meaningful — something that would tell his story, and ours. That’s how Zane’s Room was born.

The Inspiration Behind This Ralph Lauren Cake Smash
From the moment we brought him home from the birth center, Ralph Lauren somehow became part of his little story. His first outfit, the soft onesie we dressed him in that day, was Ralph Lauren. The blanket that wrapped him in those first hours was Ralph Lauren too. His baby dedication outfit? Also Ralph Lauren. It wasn’t intentional — but it became a beautiful thread that tied so many of his earliest memories together.
So when I started dreaming up his cake smash, I wanted to build something timeless, classic, and full of warmth — something that felt like him. That’s when I told my husband, “Let’s make this one from scratch.” We designed the entire backdrop and floor ourselves, creating and imagining something truly special and unique — something that felt like home, like his little world — Zane’s Room.

Every Detail Meant Something
Every single piece in the setup had a story behind it.
The teddy bears — a nod to his baby shower theme and the collection that fills his nursery. The teddy bears on the backdrop wore tiny maroon sweatshirts with the letter “Z” on them — a custom detail we designed just for him, a sweet little nod to his name.

The chest with his name Zane Ezekiel engraved on it was more than just decor; it’s a keepsake I plan to fill with all the treasures from his baby days — his tiny shoes, his dedication outfit, the soft blanket that’s been with him since birth, and that first little onesie. One day, when he’s grown, I want to hand it to him and say, “This is where it all began.”
We even included a tiny white shirt that once belonged to his dad — a baby gift from 1988 that says “Texas has a new star”. Seeing it there, next to our own little star, made me emotional behind the camera more than once.

A ball and a few favorite books also found their way into the setup — because if you know Zane, you know how much he loves to play and “read.” Everything you see in those photos is something real from his life. Nothing was just for show.

The Session Itself
When it came to styling his session, I wanted his outfit to blend seamlessly with the theme — timeless, classic, and a little bit preppy, just like the Ralph Lauren inspiration behind it. I dressed him in a crisp white button-up shirt with a blue bowtie and little green pants to match the decor. And of course, if you know Zane, you know that his hair has a life of its own — those wild, beautiful curls that I absolutely refuse to cut. They’re such a big part of who he is right now, and I wanted to make sure they were front and center in his photos.

Because he’s so familiar with the studio, he was a little confused about why he suddenly needed to sit in one spot and smile for the camera. But once we got started, he gave us the most adorable expressions — happy smiles, a few curious stares, and yes, even some tears. Every single one of them so perfectly “him.”

When it was time for the cake, he wasn’t too impressed at first. He had no interest in tasting it, but the moment I set it in front of him, he started tapping on it like it was a drum. He’s in that phase right now where everything has to make a sound, so it felt very on-brand for my little drummer. He didn’t care to eat it, but the candle absolutely fascinated him — so much so that I’m pretty sure he even got a tiny taste of wax. That was what made him giggle, and those are the moments I’ll never forget.

Then came his favorite part — the strawberry bath. Zane is currently in his strawberry-obsessed era, so I knew this would be a hit. He bit into probably every single strawberry, one by one, before deciding it would be even more fun to throw them around the tub. He splashed and laughed until his little curls were soaked and sticking to his forehead. Watching him have so much fun, surrounded by everything we’d lovingly designed for him, was one of the sweetest moments I’ve ever photographed — not as a professional, but as a mom.

A Mother’s Heart
As a photographer, I’ve always believed that portraits are more than pretty pictures — they’re stories. And this one, my sweet boy, is yours.
Zane, one day when you’re older, I hope you look back at these photos and feel how loved you’ve been from the very beginning. Every detail, every decision, every frame — it was all made with you in mind.
This session wasn’t just about celebrating your first year. It was about freezing in time all the little pieces of who you were and how much you mean to us.
Happy first birthday, my darling boy. You are my favorite masterpiece.
With all my love,
Mommy
